[Interview] EXO say they're stimulated by Wanna One too
EXO is back. On July 18, the boy group held a press conference for its 4th full album "The War" at Grand Walkerhill Hotel in Seoul. The album has a total of 9 songs including the title track "Ko Ko Bop", while it is remarkable that EXO had 800,000 copies of its album pre-ordered. EXO has become a "triple million seller" by selling more than million copies of its first, second and third full albums, and it is expected that the group will become a "quadruple million seller" soon by selling more than million copies of its fourth full album.
Q. Tell me about the title track "Ko Ko Bop".
Baekyun: "Ko Ko Bop" is a rhythmic song which has reggae sounds. The song could be a challenge for us because we've never tried such a genre of music. But that's why we could enjoy working on our new album, and I think we will be able to show a new side of ourselves through the song.
Chen: At first, I was worried about our choreography because we've never tried reggae music. However, the song has not only reggae sounds but also EDM sounds, and we could make great choreography. Please look forward to it.
Chanyeol: Personally, it's notable that all the members took much part in making our new album, and we could all grow up through the album.
Q. As you said, it's your first time to try reggae music, and it could be a challenge for you. Didn't you feel pressured about it?
Kai: It could be a challenge for us, but I got good vibes from the song when I listened to the song for the first time. I think the song can be a turning point for us. We wanted to show people that we can sing a variety of kinds of songs perfectly, and I'm sure you will enjoy the song because the song has exciting reggae rhythm.
Baekhyun: You know, even people who know nothing about music can enjoy reggae music because reggae music has exciting rhythm. And I think many people will like the song because the song also includes EDM sounds.
Q. What kind of message did you want to deliver through your new album?
Sehun: In recent years, a lot of tragic incidents have happened all around the world. We wanted to deliver some hopeful messages through the album.
Suho: Yeah, we wanted to heal people and bring people together.
Q. How does it feel to have 800,000 copies of your album pre-ordered?
Chanyeol: I feel really great, and I feel honored too. My parents are very happy about it too. I'm very thankful to our fans.
Q. It has been 5 years since you debuted, and there are many k-pop idol groups who are younger than you. Among them, who do you think is the most competent?
Suho: Well, all of them are doing really great, but we love NCT the most. And we also like Wanna One. We can do their choreography, and we're stimulated by them too. We're trying our best to be a good example to young idol groups.
Q. What will you do if you win a no.1 trophy of a music chart show?
Baekhyun: Well, we always don't think about such a thing. Instead, we usually decide what to extemporaneously before hitting the stage. I think we will do something our fans want us to do.
Q. What's your goal?
Kai: You know, we sold more than million copies of our first, second and third full albums, and I hope we can become a million seller once more.
Baekhyun: It doesn't mean we must make it, but, yeah, I hope we can become a million seller once more. And actually, we really wanted to become more intimate with our fans because it has been 5 years since we debuted and we still have many years to spend together. That's why we took much part in writing our new songs. I think our new songs can be loved by not only our fans but also the general public, so please give us your love and interest.
