Stories behind Gaon's decision on G-Dragon's USB album

On June 19, Gaon chart officially announced that it decided not to count GD's USB as an album, stating "To be considered as an album, music should be contained in a material object. We can't define digital music as an album because it could break down the boundary between digital download chart and album chart", while YG Entertainment announced "We respect Gaon's opinions, but we're sorry that Gaon's way of counting is behind the times".

Well, in a word, it's ridiculous. The appearance of music album has been changing again and again, and Gaon and the Korea Music Content Industry Association, which is currently running the Chart can't just keep up with the trend. They can't define digital music as an album because it could break down the boundary between digital download chart and album chart? The boundary has already begun to crumble down.

Anyway, why do you think the Korea Music Content Industry Association and Gaon chart decided not to count GD's USB as an album, then? There are some stories behind it.

You know, On June 8, GD released his new solo album "Kwon Jiyong", while it's notable that the album was released as an USB, not as a CD. And the Korea Music Content Industry Association said it's hard to admit GD's USB album as a music album, stating "It's just a tool to download music". However, after GD posting a long piece of writing on his SNS on June 15, the association changed its position and said nothing is confirmed and it will just abide by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's decision.

So, it took 4 days for the Korea Music Content Industry Association to make a final decision on the matter, and, yeah, the association decided not to count GD's USB as an album.

Then, what do you think happened during the 4 days? During the days, G-Dragon was harshly attacked by Korean media outlets. They said it's ridiculous to count GD's USB as an album, stating it was wrong sort of innovation. They attacked the idol star so harshly because, yeah, as I've said before, they hate YG and they thought it's a great chance to strike a blow to YG. And as there were many media outlets which attacked GD, many Korean netizens believed the articles are true and posted bad comments about GD's album.

In this situation, Gaon chart decided not to count GD's USB as an album because it seemed many people (including Korean media outlets) are opposed to counting it as an album. Do you think the Korea Music Content Industry Association and Gaon made such as decision because it really has its own ideas about it? No, they're just very conscious of the media.
